How to Write an Investment Memo

An effective investment memo is not a research report; it is a decision-making tool designed to move a specific action from proposal to execution. To succeed, the author must transform raw diligence into a structured, openable file that serves as a durable record of conviction and risk.

The memo as a file

A high-quality memo functions as a single, coherent file that captures the essence of a specific decision or request. It must begin with a clear decision/ask—what exactly is being proposed for approval? This is immediately followed by a one-sentence thesis that summarizes the core opportunity. The memo provides the necessary company and context, establishing the environment in which the decision is made. Crucially, every memo must include a time window or “as-of” date to ensure the reader understands the temporal boundaries of the evidence. All central claims must be supported by discrete, verifiable evidence rather than generalities. The document must explicitly detail the risks and, more importantly, define the specific conditions that would change the author’s mind.
